History of Reiki

History of Reiki;

Reiki; Rei (soul/spirit) ki (vital energy)

Reiki is Spiritual life force or vital energy that is said to reside in all living things.  It has been told that Reiki is based on an ancient Buddhist technique developed in Japan in the late 19th or early 20th century by Dr. Mikao Usui.  During a Reiki session the therapist channels this energy through him/herself by the gentle laying on of the hands.  This activates the patients natural healing abilities, which restores physical and emotional well being.

Reiki was developed by Mikao Usui (臼井甕男) in 1922 whilst performing Isyu Guo, a twenty-one day Buddhist training course held on Mt. Kurama. It is not known for certain what Usui was required to do during this training, though it most likely involved meditation and fasting. It is claimed that by a mystical revelation, Usui had gained the knowledge and spiritual power to apply and attune others to what he called Reiki, which entered his body through his crown chakra (blog on chakras coming soon). In April 1922, Usui moved to Tokyo, and founded the Usui Reiki Ryōhō Gakkai ("臼井靈氣療法學會" in Traditional Mandarin, meaning Usui's Spiritual Energy Therapy Method Society) in order to continue treating people on a large scale with Reiki. Since then Reiki had been spread worldwide, and still growing strong today.

Reiki is an ancient form of healing whose knowledge was lost to the world for centuries until it was rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Christian Minister.
